Is it a surprise to see World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the finals of Wimbledon again? Of course not. In fact, winning the Championships without playing a warm-up tournament on grass might also become a routine for the Serb. The top-ranked Djokovic is only one step away from winning Wimbledon for the sixth time in his celebrated career.

After dropping the opening set in the first round against Jack Draper, the 34-year-old has been clinical in dispatching opponents, en-route to the finals. Besides being the defending champion, the Serb is also chasing a Calendar Slam for the year, a feat which was last achieved by the legendary Australian Rod Laver in 1969. Come July 11, there will be plenty at stake for the top seed. A win for Djokovic might also put the ‘GOAT’ debate to rest.

Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini has statistically been the best player on grass this season having won 11 matches on the bounce. The Italian’s winning streak started at the Queen’s Club in the lead up to the Championships. Berrettini comes into the final after having beaten Felix Auger-Aliasimme and Hubert Hurkacz in the quarters and semis respectively.

The 25-year-old has moved quietly through the draw and has only played two tiebreaks sets at this year’s Wimbledon. Having won 33 matches across surfaces in 2021 till now, Berrettini will be brimming with confidence and would be itching to create history at the All England Club on the final Sunday of the tournament. If the seventh seed can get the better of the Serb unlike his failed attempt at the 2021 Roland Garros quarterfinals, then Berrettini can become the first Italian ever to win Wimbledon.

The Serb currently leads the Italian 2-0 in their head to head. After beating Berrettini in WTF in London in 2019, Djokovic once again downed the World No.9 in the quarterfinals of the recently concluded French Open.

Considering Berrettini will be playing his first Grand Slam final, his biggest opponent will come in the form of anxiety and nerves. If he can arrest early jitters, that will most likely help him deal better with the daunting challenge of dethroning Djokovic. The Italian does possess the ammunition (big serve and booming forehand) to trouble the defending champion. However, expect the five-time winner to return balls deep and also use the backhand slice to great effect, which will stay low onto his opponent’s backhand, preventing Berrettini from unleashing his flat shots.

In all likelihood, Djokovic’s zeal to win, coupled with his mental fortitude is likely to suck the air out of first-timer Berrettini. It is also not to be forgotten that the 19-time Grand Slam champion is re-writing history and has only lost one Wimbledon final in six outings thus far. Tough to see the World No.9 disrupting Djokovic’s juggernaut on Sunday.

Match Prediction: Novak Djokovic should win in four sets.
