Dominic Thiem suffered a huge blow in his bid to compete at Wimbledon 2021, after the Austrian withdrew from the Mallorca Open 2021 due to a wrist injury. The world number five was in the middle of his second round match against Adrian Mannarino, when he had to retire due to wrist issues.
Dominic Thiem made an announcement on Twitter, that he was suffering from a wrist injury, and that he would travel to Barcelona for further testing. However, according to latest reports, the Austrian has suffered a tendon sheath injury in his wrist, and will be out of action for 10 days. This means that Thiem is likely to pull out of Wimbledon 2021.
Dominic Thiem suffers another setback
Dominic Thiem has not had a great year on tour so far. The Austrian has seen his ranking fall from world number three to five in the span of just five months. He was defeated in the first round of French Open 2021 in five sets, despite being two sets up.
The Austrian has also had to deal with a lot of personal issues this year, given his legal dispute with former coach. Thiem was also out of action for a period of two months, after suffering from a recurrent foot problem.
Dominic Thiem has also pulled out of Tokyo Olympics 2021 this year, and will instead focus on defending his title at US Open 2021. Last year, he lifted the title at Flushing Meadows, after he defeated Alexander Zverev in five sets in the final.
According to the latest reports, an official decision to withdraw from Wimbledon 2021 will be made tomorrow by Dominic Thiem.
