Dominic Thiem suffered yet another major setback, as he had to withdraw from Mallorca Open due to an injury. The Austrian was playing in the second round of Mallorca Open 2021 against Adrian Mannarino, where he was cruising towards a first set victory. However, he had to withdraw from the match, after leading 5-2 in the opening set.
Dominic Thiem wrote a message on Twitter to reveal details about his injury. The Austrian stated that there was an issue with his wrist, and the scans did not reveal clear results. Hence, he will travel to Barcelona for further scans and a clear diagnosis.
Dominic Thiem’s participation at Wimbledon 2021 in some major doubt
Dominic Thiem had already withdrawn from Tokyo Olympics 2021 this year, as he wanted to focus on defending his title at US Open 2021. However, with his recent injury at Mallorca Open, the world number five might not compete at Wimbledon 2021.
“Yesterday during the match I had a problem with my wrist. I went immediately to do an MRI at the hospital in Palma de Mallorca. The results weren’t that clear and I have decided to go to Barcelona to check with a specialist. I hope I can get the results and a clear diagnosis in the next days,” write Thiem.
Dominic Thiem has had a torrid time on tour this year, as he is yet to lift a title. The Austrian was defeated in the first round of French Open 2021 in five sets by Pablo Andujar. He did not fare well at the Australian Open 2021 as well losing in the fourth round. The world number five struggled with an ongoing foot injury, which ruled him out of action for almost two months.
