“I didn’t deserve to win” Emma Raducanu reacts to her quarter-final defeat to Marta Kostyuk at the Transylvania Open 2021

World No. 23 and the 3rd seed at the inaugural Transylvania Open 2021, Emma Raducanu was shown the exit door in the quarter-finals by Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in a shocking result that no one saw coming. With Emma picking up her first Tour win this week in Romania, many thought that the Brit is back to her winning ways but Marta proved too much for Emma.
Marta won the tie 6-2, 6-1 in just 57 minutes in the complete demolition of the newly crowned US Open champion and gave another bitter taste of life on the Tour for Emma who is getting accustomed to the life on the Tour. Speaking about her match against Marta, Emma was quite frank and praised Marta for her performance.
‘I wasn’t physically feeling 100 per cent today, I was quite tired and lethargic, I knew that from practice this morning. I think it’s just the last six months it’s been a lot of learnings and I’ve experienced a lot with not so many gaps, I’m just adapting to the fast-paced life of the tour.
“It’s disappointing that you have these days, it’s not a nice feeling to have. I just need to move on from it and brush it off and then I’ll be back in another tournament soon. I think we both come such a long way that it’s just a completely different match now, she just played very well and I didn’t deserve to win,” said Emma dismissing that the result was linked to the Junior days meeting between the two teenagers.
Emma Raducanu will now play in Linz
With Emma’s father Ian, hailing from Romania, the youngster was asked whether she will now visit her grandmother Niculina who still resides in Romania. Emma however was not sure whether she will visit her grandmother citing the ongoing Pandemic and the need to protect her grandmother as the teen is travelling everywhere.
“I don’t know, because of the pandemic, I want to protect her and it’s a difficult situation here with the cases,” said Emma referring to the sudden rise of cases in Romania that forced the tournament organisers to play the tournament behind doors without any spectators allowed in the stadium.
Emma now has a week to get back in shape and prepare herself for the final WTA-250 tournament of the season when she takes the court at the 2021 Upper Austria Ladies Linz starting November 6.
