French Open 2021: Day 3: Nadal and Schwartzman progress into the second round; Rublev crashes out

Day 3 of French Open 2021 featured the likes of 13 time champion, Rafael Nadal and last year’s semifinalist, Diego Schwartzman. Both, Nadal and Schwartzman won in straight sets to progress into the second round, whereas, Andrey Rublev was defeated in the first round on Tuesday. The Russian’s defeat was one of the major upsets of the day.

Rafael Nadal defeated the Australian, Alexei Popyrin in straight sets in the first round encounter. The Spaniard won by a score-line of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 to progress into the second round. The third seed converted four out of his 11 break point opportunities, and served seven aces during the whole match.

The Spaniard was broken in the third set, and was down 5-3. However, he broke the Australian and managed to clinch the match in a tiebreaker. Rafael Nadal will now face Frenchman, Richard Gasquet in the second round clash.

Diego Schwartzman makes a winning return to Paris

Diego Schwartzman will be the favourite in the upcoming Diego Schwartzman vs Felix Auger-Aliassime clash at the Rome Masters 2021.

Diego Schwartzman was struggling for form prior to French Open 2021. The ninth seed defeated Lu Yen-Hsun in straight sets in the first round in straight sets. The Argentine won by a score-line of 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. Schwartzman converted eight of his 12 break point opportunities, and won 78% of his points on first serve. He won 91 points during the whole match, whereas, his opponent won just 55 points.

Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger Aliassime crash out in the first round

Felix Auger Aliassime was defeated in the first round by the Italian, Andreas Seppi in the first round itself. The Canadian lost 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. Seppi broke the 20th seed’s serve four times during the match, whereas, he served seven double faults. Felix Auger Aliassime had 11 aces to his name, but managed to win just 68% of his points on first serve.

Andrey Rublev faced a shocking result in the first round of French Open 2021. The Russian was defeated in a five set thriller by a score-line of 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4. Rublev lost the first two sets, but made a quick recovery to win the next two sets. However, Jan Lennard Struff held his nerve to win the final set. Rublev had an accuracy of just 48% on his first serve, and could manage to break the German on three occasions.
