Garbine Muguruza is a two-time Grand Slam champion. After Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, she is the second Spaniard woman to reach World No. 1. The former World No. 1 has previously won ten singles titles during her career, so the 28-year-old is no rookie to the tour. She’s had some tremendous highs and some very painful lows in her career.

Muguruza, who was ousted in the second round of the Australian Open by Alize Cornet, said she didn’t miss the men’s singles final, which pitted her compatriot Rafael Nadal against World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev for a chance at history.

“Oh my God, what a match. I saw him start in the morning and I went and came back and went and came back. It was a legendary match. It was really impressive. I think Rafa showed his essence in that match. He is tough, strong, everything. I think that was a perfect example that he is the best to turn a match around, fight and stay there. It was incredible,” she said.

When it comes to Nadal and Muguruza, there is a deep sense of reciprocity. Both players share the same soil under their feet, and Nadal never forgets to recognize her accomplishments. In 2021, when she became the first Spanish woman to win the WTA finals, Nadal said at his Foundation’s tenth-anniversary celebration, “I am happy for Garbiñe. What she has achieved is a milestone in our sport and a joy for Spanish tennis. I congratulate her”.

The current World No. 6, who is defending her title at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships, had a rather bumpy start to the season, as she was knocked out in the second round by Alize Cornet at the Australian Open.

“I was disappointed. It took a couple of days back home [to get over it],” Muguruza said. She maintained, however, that she had a positive approach and began asking sensible questions. “I’m like, ‘Okay, am I going to shake things up? How I’m going to come back stronger?’…  It’s always disappointing to lose in a Grand Slam that early. But I moved on. I’m here. This is a good tournament. It’s in the past already,” she added.

Muguruza stated that it was a rewarding feeling for her to enter the event as the defending champion. She also added that it was preferable to be a target than a nobody since it would drive her to do better.
