Coco Gauff vs Elise Mertens : Preview
Coco Gauff is set to make her Grass debut for the season as she begins her preparations for the upcoming Wimbledon 2021. Gauff shot to fame with her impressive performance at the 2019 Wimbledon where she reached the 4th round after having received a wildcard in the qualifying stages, becoming the youngest ever in Open Era to reach the main draw at the Wimbledon.
Gauff has been in amazing form this season and game went a level ahead during the Clay season. She clinched a double at the WTA Parma Open 2021 and later reached the quarter-finals of the French Open 2021 losing to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova who won a historic double at the Grand Slam claiming both the Singles and Doubles trophy.
Elise Mertens will look to make a good start this time around at the Eastbourne International after getting defeated in the 1st round match at the 2021 Birmingham Classic where she made her Grass season debut. Although the match was a close affair going into tie-breaks in all 3-sets, Mertens was the unfortunate one to lose in the encounter.
Mertens has had her share of success this season winning the Gippsland Trophy 2021 and later reached the finals at the Istanbul Open 2021. She will be looking to get back into her form in Eastbourne to reach Wimbledon with confidence.
Coco Gauff vs Elise Mertens : Head to Head
This will be their first ever meeting on the tour, hence the head-to-head stands at 0-0.
Coco Gauff vs Elise Mertens : Prediction
Mertens enters the tie with a career Grass record of 28-21 and a season record of 22-9. She was 13-3 on Hardcourts and 9-5 on Clay and now faces a tough test against the in-form American teen Gauff.
Gauff will play in her 2nd Grass season of her career and after an impressive start of 6-1 in the 2019 Grass season, many will be hopeful and backing the teenager to perform well again this year. She comes in with a season record of 27-10 which includes 11-6 record on Hardcourts and 16-4 on Clay. Looking at these numbers and overall season form, Gauff will be the favourite for this clash.
