Coco Gauff vs Elena Vesnina: Preview

Coco Gauff

Gauff comes into this round after beating Francesca Jones in straight sets. Although she lost in the second round at Eastbourne, it is well know that the young American loves playing on the grass and even won six out of seven matches on the surface in 2019. She also experienced a stunning win over Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019. She even reached the final 16 at the All England Club in 2019. Furthermore, Gauff enjoyed a fruitful time on the clay this season after winning 16 matches in 20 outings. Given her recent run and confidence, she looks poised to perhaps better her 2019 Wimbledon record.

On the other hand, Vesnina played in her first match at Wimbledon since losing in the second round of the 2017 edition to Victoria Azarenka. She beat Martina Trevisan in the first round. The Russian has been away from action post her pregnancy and is once again trying to find her feet on the tour. In fact, she has played only six matches on the tour in 2021. Although she is a former semifinalist at the All England Club (2016), lack of match play and time away from the court might just affect her when she comes up against a quicker and younger Gauff.

While Vesnina has done well to get back to the tour after her pregnancy and use her protected ranking, she is likely to get heavily tested against a fitter and inform opponent in Coco. If the young American maintains consistency in her play, it is tough to see the Russian come up with a plan. Expect Gauff to overpower to senior opponent.

Match Prediction: Coco Gauff should win in two sets.
