‘Mighty Medvedev Mauled’: Grigor Dimitrov thrashes Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round at Indian Wells

Daniil Medvedev has been simply outstanding in the past few months. He thrashed all his opponents one after the other at the US Open and registered his first-ever Grand Slam title win. Such was his domination that he thrashed World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

Evidently, when Medvedev stepped into the Indian Wells Open, all eyes were on him as everyone expected the top-seeded player to deliver his best. He started off in great fashion and was defeating his opponents with relative ease. However, in the fourth-round clash, he was shocked by Grigor Dimitrov.

Dimitrov dropped the first-set and the game looked overwhelmingly in favor of Medvedev. Even in the second set, Medvedev started off brilliantly. While the Russian was cruising towards an easy win with a lead of 4-1 in the second set, Dimitrov decided to go beast mode.

He completely cornered Medvedev in the second set and went on to script a historic win by winning the deciding set without much hassle. Praising his opponent after the game, Medvedev said, “If he plays like this, like the way he played me from 4-1, then he is going to win the tournament.”

He played the second half of the match better than anyone did against me at the US Open. It is not like I gave him the match. I did feel exhausted in this tournament. Now I can say it. I couldn’t say it before my matches. There are a few physical things that have come up,” Medvedev went on to add. However, the World No. 2 also claimed that something like this would not have happened at a Grand Slam.

I don’t see this as the end of the world. I don’t think this would happen in a Grand Slam. There are some small points I could have done better,” he said. Without a doubt, Dimitrov’s emphatic win by 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Medvedev would give him a lot of confidence moving further into the tournament.
