Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal created history last week when he became the first player to win 21 Grand Slam Men’s titles after he defeated Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open, in one of the longest finals in Grand Slams history.
The Spaniard lost the first two sets and was trailing Medvedev 3-2(0-40) in the third set. At this moment, it looked Nadal was heading for another runner-up finish at the Australian Open, He lost in the finals at the Melbourne Major 4 times and his last win was more than a decade ago.
But the 35-year-old reminded everyone why he is considered to be one of the best tennis players of all time, when he scripted a comeback that will be etched in the minds of all tennis fans, to win his second Australian Open title. He also broke the three-way tie he held with Djokovic and Federer and became the first male player to win 21 Slams.
“This is his greatest accomplishment: Greg Rusedski on Rafael Nadal’s Australian Open win
Former US Open runner-up Greg Rusedski lauded Nadal for the mental strength that he displayed and talked about the Spaniard’s incredible return to the tour after undergoing surgery last year.
Rusedski said, “He is a genetic freak of nature and also his mental fortitude is second to none. And also if you want one guy playing for your life for one match, he is your man. I mean what he has done is sensational. Cuz we got a little bit of backstory here as well, let’s not forget the picture on his crutches. He wasn’t even putting any weight on that foot we are talking about. Comes out, starts the year, wins two events in Melbourne. The lead-up tournament then the Australian Open to win his 21st Slam.”
Rusedski also praised Nadal for his fortitude to come back from two sets down while facing three break points in the third set. He also said Nadal’s win against Medvedev to win the title, was his best achievement.
“As you said two sets down (0-40) 3-2, we’re thinking curtains down, there is no way he is getting back. Rafa just showed us the fortitude of the fight. Also, let’s not forget that crowd, I mean that crowd was insane how much they were behind Rafa, they wanted to see history happen as well. So, for me probably his greatest accomplishment in his career. Yes we can talk about 13 French Opens which will never be broken, but this in itself against Daniil Medvedev was truly amazing,” Rusedski said in a podcast with Inside-In.
