How much does Naomi Osaka earn in a year?

Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka, the reigning US Open and Australian Open champion, is the new face of ladies tennis in terms of performance, and dare I say one who is slowly  leaving behind Serena Williams in terms of popularity too. Born in Japan, and raised in the US this twenty three year old has chosen to be a Japanese citizen. She is among other things also the first Japanese player to be ranked No.1 in the World. In her relatively young career, the twenty-three year old has already picked up four Grand Slams.

In 2020, Naomi Osaka earned $37.4 million from prize money and endorsements, and became the highest paid female athlete in the world. She was ranked 33rd in the overall list of top 100. This tag of highest paid female athlete has over the years been dominated by Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. Infact, the last time it was not the two of them was in 2003 when Venus Williams was the highest paid one. So Naomi has had to break the clique to go right on top.

It’s reported that out of the $37.4 million that Osaka earned, $ 34 million were from endorsements. One of the brands that pays her the most money is Nike. Nike poached Osaka away from Adidas in 2019 in a deal that is worth some $10 million and runs till 2025.

In announcing the deal, Amy Montagne VP, GM of Global Categories, on behalf of Nike had said, “As we continue to inspire millions of athletes to chase their crazy dreams, Naomi is an incredible talent to add to our roster and help drive our commitment to inspiring a new generation of female athletes.” He continued, “We are thrilled to have her join our team.

Osaka in her deal with Nike also managed to secure a provision where she will wear logos of other brands, that sponsor her, as well. Some of those are Nippon Airways, MasterCard and ramen noodle maker Nissin Foods. With other Nike star athletes like Maria Sharapova retiring and Serena Williams in decline, the Maria Osaka camp managed to pull off this coup. But Nike will be happy with their deal as they have indeed signed what looks like ‘ one for the log run.’
