‘Not Zverev’ Hubert Hurkacz’s coach names who will be the leaders on Tour for the 2022 season
Alexander Zverev, Hubert Hurkacz and Craig Boynton
Hubert Hurkacz had a fantastic outing in the 2021 season as the Polish youngster gave some fantastic performances in big events and also broke into the Top-10 of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career and also became just the second Polish man in history to be ranked inside the Top-10 of the ATP rankings.
Hurkacz after his performances in 2021 is now being looked as one of the ‘next-gen’ players who will be looking to follow the footsteps of Big-3 and compete for titles at the Grand Slams and other Tour-level tournaments as well. While the Big-3 continue to remain actively dominant on the Tour, Hurkacz’s coach Craig Boynton discussed who according to him are the next season’s leaders.
“I think we can classify the players into two groups. There are the leaders, who will be the favourites of all big events, like Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and a healthy Rafael Nadal. We’ll see when Roger returns and how he plays. After that it’s a very closed group of about eight guys including Hubi who are there or are getting there.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if any of these eight to twelve guys win a Grand Slam or the Grand Tournaments next year,” said Craig as he omitted World No. 3 Alexander Zverev and World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas along with Hurkacz, naming the trio in underdogs group despite Zverev and Tsitsipas giving some fantastic results in Grand Slam events this year.
Hubert Hurkacz won 3 titles in 2021
Hurkacz had his most successful season so far in his career as he went on to win 3 titles in 2021 while also getting some good results on the Tour as well. At the Grand Slams, he lost in the first round of the Australian Open and the French Open while he lost in the 2nd round of the US Open.
His best result in Grand Slam events came at the Wimbledon where he reached the semi-finals having defeated 8-time champion Roger Federer in straight-sets with a 6-0 drubbing in the 3rd set in their quarter-final clash to reach his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final.
On tour, he won titles at Delray Beach, the Miami Masters which is his biggest career title and then won his 3rd and final title of the season in Metz. He made the quarter-finals of Indian Wells and Toronto Masters while reaching the semi-finals of the Paris Masters losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in a tight 3-setter.
