‘I am ready to work hard and start humble,’ Dominic Thiem all set to stage a comeback next week at the Andalucia Open after eight months

Dominic Thiem
Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem is all set to stage a comeback to professional tennis after being out of action for 8 months. Thiem was ruled out due to a wrist injury he developed in Mallorca ahead of Wimbledon 2021. Ever since then, he has been delaying his comeback in order to attain 100% fitness.
He was first scheduled to come back at the Australian leg earlier this year but decided to skip it and turn up for the Sunshine double. He withdrew at the eleventh hour and decided to come back in the clay season.
The Austrian took to social media to announce that he will be coming back at the Andalucia Open– an ATP Challenger event. His main motive is to get match practice and wants to start at a lower level to give himself more time to compete against the top players.
“Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know that I will be playing this upcoming week a tournament in Marbella, Spain. I want to start getting in contact with the competition after all these months and I believe this is the right way to start,” he wrote in a statement.
He further said that the injury period has been very tough for him and getting back on the tennis court is what he has been waiting for. He understands that this will be a slow process and hence doesn’t want to rush in for the results.
“It’s been a very, very tough period for me and to go back to competition is what I need. To step on a tennis court and compete is what I have been waiting for so long and as you know I had a lot of setbacks. I know this will be a slow process of getting back to the top level, but I am ready to work hard and start humble,” he said.
“I want to thank the tournament director for his invitation at the Andalucia Open. Thanks also to you all for the support!”
Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka eye comeback at Marbella

Thiem will be playing his first tournament in almost 8 months. Also making his comeback at the Andalucia Open is 3-time grand slam champion, Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss last competed professionally at the 2021 Qatar Open and was ruled out due to a leg injury. He is currently ranked outside the top 250 and received a wildcard for Marbella.
Both Thiem and Wawrinka are exceptional clay court players and when in their prime, were believed to be the biggest threat to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the French Open. Thiem reached the final of consecutive French Open in 2018 and 2019 while Wawrinka defeated Djokovic in the final to win the 2015 French Open.
