Serena Williams’ father’s biopic King Richard received rave reviews from critics upon his release. The film is now officially deemed Oscar-worthy after it received a staggering six nominations at the Academy Awards.
The biographical documentary focuses on Serena and Venus’ father Richard Williams molded his daughters into the tennis greats that they are now. It is based on the sisters’ early tennis careers and how their demanding yet caring father planned their careers for them and wrote an 84-page plan to achieve that dream into action. Serena took to Instagram to express her delight after the nominations were announced.
Serena and Venus along with their sister Isha Price were closely involved during the film-making and were the executive producers of the movie. For their contribution, they will also be going to the Oscars as part of the movie’s production team. The film received nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Original Song, and Will Smith for the Best Actor for portraying the titular character Richard Williams, while Aunjanue Ellis will be vying for the Best Supporting Actress for portraying Williams mother and coach. Former tennis player and current expert Prakash Amritraj, who had a chance to watch the film in advance before its official screening, expressed his delight about the movie being nominated for the Academy Awards and was also happy about the fact that such a heart-warming story was brought to life and everyone can experience its greatness.
‘They (Serena, Venus and Isha) were working with the script, working with the producer, Tim White, a good friend of mine who just cared so much about bringing the story and its truth to the screen. I am just so happy because, at the end of the day, it’s about a father, his love for his kids, and turning pain into miracles and that’s something we all get to share” Amritraj said while discussing the movie on the Tennis Channel.
