“I’ve lost matches like these before,” Alexander Zverev relieved after a clutch performance against Jannik Sinner at Monte Carlo
Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev continued his dominating form as he fought his way through to the semifinals of the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters. The German has been in fine form but he did have to put his best foot forward to beat Jannik Sinner in a thrilling three-set contest. However, eventually, the 24-year-old had the last laugh as he won 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(5) to enter the semifinals.
Zverev broke early but Jannik Sinner showed great character to recover from that and then launch his own attack which took the German by surprise as Sinner bagged the first set. Zverev who was losing his grip on the match quickly brought himself back in the second set with some scintillating tennis to force the third set.
The German failed to carry his momentum from the second set into the third as he fought back twice from a breakdown in the third set to salvage a third-set tiebreaker. Zverev held his nerves way better than the Italian youngster as Zverev wrapped up the tiebreaker and the match.
“This win will definitely help me”: Alexander Zverev
After the match, Zverev was very satisfied with his performance as he was full of praises for his opponent, Jannik Sinner. It has been a tough year for the German and therefore he feels that this win was much needed to raise his morale for future events. “It means a lot [to win against Sinner], especially with how this year has been going so far for me,” Zverev said on-court after reaching the semifinals at the Monte Carlo Masters
Alexander Zverev has had a topsy campaign on tour this year and therefore he was very satisfied with the result as he shared how he has lost long games like these. “I’ve lost long matches like that so I’m happy that I won this match – a very high-level match – so I’m happy with this win,” the World No.3 added.
In this win against Sinner where at one point of time the situation was against his favor, Zverev did exceptionally well to claw back in the game and then win. So it will surely boost his morale against a very good up and rising talent like Sinner. he reiterated the same as he told, “I’ve lost so many matches this year, it’s in the back of my mind, I think this one will definitely help me.”
Alexander Zverev will meet defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals as the German aims to win his sixth ATP 1000 Masters title in Monaco. Tsitsipas defeated Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinals and it promises to be a very exciting clash between two quality players.
