The Tennis world got a glimpse about Serena Williams and Venus Williams‘ childhood and their ascendance to being one of the greatest players of all time, through the docu-drama released in 2021, King Richard. The film received rave reviews from critics and is in the running for six Oscar awards.
The film depicts the legendary Williams sister’s tennis journey through the viewpoint of their father, Richard Williams. The film showed how invested Richard was hugely invested in Serena and Venus’ tennis career and how Richard and his wife Oracene became coaches for their daughters in their early careers, and how he laid the groundwork on their whole career trajectories before they were even born.
Needless to say, the film has garnered attention all over the world with many showering praises over the bond depicted between Richard Williams and his daughters. 7 time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton expressed his admiration for the biopic. The Brit praised how the film depicted that the way to the top echelons in a sport is not easy and there are numerous sacrifices one has to do in order to attain the elite status. Hamilton also hailed Serena and Venus for the success they had achieved over the years after the sacrifices their parents had to do during Serena and Venus’ early career stages.
“For those two, to see both of them rise and see their success and trials and tribulations. But like all of us very, very much, we don’t always understand what it’s taken to get there people that tune in probably just think that they’re just the best, and not understanding the commitment and the time and sacrifice that they have to put in,” Hamilton said during his press conference at the Jeddah Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia.

Hamilton remarked he could relate to the film as he also shared a special bond with his family. The film also depicted how Richard and Serena’s mother Oracene Price made many sacrifices so that their daughters would have a good future prospect in their tennis career. Hamilton is arguably one of the greatest F1 drivers there ever has been, but the Brit held Serena and Venus with much more respect saying, he would also want to achieve success akin to the talented duo.
“And so it’s amazing that it’s that we was able to highlight that and just you know. Behind everyone that’s successful, there is always somebody and I can relate to it because I have a very amazing family who, without them, I would not be here today. And I hope at some stage, I’ll be able to do something similar. I think it’s inspiring for families out there. I’m sure anyone in here that has kids wants the best for their kids, and wants to create the best opportunity and push them in the right way, but not too much. And I think that was a great showing of how you can do that,” he concluded.
