“I remember that, getting his autograph,” Taylor Fritz shares his nostalgic memory of Andy Murray
Taylor Fritz and Andy Murray
Taylor Fritz created history on Saturday by becoming the first American male tennis player since former US Open winner Andy Roddick in 2009-10 to reach back-to-back semi-finals at the Indian Wells Masters. This achievement came after he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in the 2022 Indian Wells Masters quarterfinals, securing his spot in the tournament’s semi-finals.
After accomplishing such a feat, Taylor Fritz reflected on his childhood memories of seeing his idol Andy Murray play in the Indian Wells event, as well as the fact that he was fortunate enough to obtain the Brit’s autograph. “I remember watching Andy Murray’s match when he was younger. They had him on, hard to believe, one of the side courts. I remember that, getting his autograph.”
Taylor Fritz has a long list of achievements at Indian Wells, where he is always a fan favourite. Growing up near San Diego as the son of former WTA Tour player Kathy May, he began attending the event as a child.
Having been familiar with the court from such an early age, The 24-year-old went then on to reveal his motivation behind becoming a tennis player and how he got to where he is now. In his words, “Those are the moments why I play tennis, the reason why I wanted to be a professional athlete as a kid. It’s the reason why I do it, is that moment when you win, you can just kind of finally relax, let it all out. Especially with the crowd, I’m taking it in”.
Taylor Fritz will lock horns with Andrey Rublev in the semi-final contest of the Indian Wells 2022
After a strong showing at the ATP Cup, where he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cameron Norrie, Taylor Fritz advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open before falling in a five-setter to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Since then, he has shown potential in tournaments such as the Dallas Open and the Mexican Open. Following that, the American arrived at Indian Wells and won his first match against Kamil Majchrzak. He then upset Jaume Munar, Alex de Minaur, and Miomir Kecmanovic to go to the semifinals for the second year in a row, where his adversary Andrey Rublev is waiting for him.
As it turns out, these two players go way back. As per Fritz, they attended practices together and played together in the juniors. He also revealed that he is impressed to see the wonders they both are creating in the tennis field. “I’m thinking back when we were 17 years old playing in the juniors, just like before either one of us were having any kind of professional results. It’s really cool to see how we’ve come up together and the kind of results we’re producing now”.
Moreover, Sunday’s match is going to be tempting in numerous ways as it is not only a battle of the adversaries for the crown but also a battle between the childhood buddies on the court.
