“I want to promote peace all over the world”- Daniil Medvedev speaks out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Daniil Medvedev on Ukraine-Russia conflicts
Following Novak Djokovic’s exit at the Dubai Tennis Championships, Daniil Medvedev is set to be the new World No.1 on Monday. It is an astonishing achievement for the Russian as he becomes the first player since Andy Murray in 2016, to dethrone Djokovic from the top of the standings.
This all happened on the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a full-fledged war on Ukraine on the pretext of ‘military operation’. Russian troops have surrounded the borders of Ukraine, which forced the latter to announce martial law in view of the conflicts.
Tennis take a backseat in such situations, and Medvedev sent out a strong message and called for peace amidst Ukraine-Russia conflicts. The Russian also said it was hard to play considering the situation in Ukraine and said he wants to ‘promote peace all over the world’.
“Watching the news from home, waking up here in Mexico, was not easy. By being a tennis player, I want to promote peace all over the world. We play in so many different countries; I’ve been in so many countries as a junior and as a pro. It’s just not easy to hear all this news. I’m all for peace,” Medvedev said during a press conference shortly after his quarter-final win.
“In this moment, you understand that tennis sometimes is not that important,” he added.
Fellow Russian Andrey Rublev also expressed solidarity for Ukraine and condemned the attacks led by his own country. He also set out a bold statement by sharing Instagram posts with the caption “No to War!”
“I don’t know if this post will have any impact on the situation, but I want to say that I don’t want war, aggression, deaths of civilians, I don’t wanna see shocking news. I want to see my friends again and discuss about everything but war and of politics,” he said.
Daniil Medvedev sets up a semi-final clash with Nadal
Just a month after the epic 5-set final at the Australian Open, the two most in-form players currently on tour, Nadal and Medvedev are set to clash again in the semi-finals of the Mexican Open. After securing the No.1 ranking, the Russian will be looking to cap it off by avenging his finals defeat to Nadal and inch closer to his maiden title of the year.
Whereas Nadal will be looking to extend his unbeaten run of 13 matches, his best start to a season to date. Both the players have been dominant so far and progressed to the semi-finals with straight-set wins.
