Spanish legend Rafael Nadal has been the best player this season by a mile. He is currently riding on an 18-match winning streak and has already won 3 titles so far. He won the Melbourne Summer Set to start the year and then created history at the Australian Open by becoming the first man to win 21 grand slam titles when he came from 2 sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final.
After a couple of weeks’ rest, he then competed at Mexican Open which he won without dropping a set. This week at Indian Wells, he nudged past Sebastian Korda in the second round and then defeated 27th seed Dan Evans in the third round. He then got the better of Reilly Opelka in the fourth round in straight sets 7-6(3),7-6(5) to book a date with Kyrgios.
Australian showman Nick Kyrgios hasn’t played much tennis post the resumption of the tour in 2020 but he looks like a man on a mission this season. He started the season at the Australian Open where he bowed out in the second round to Daniil Medvedev after taking a set. He also won the Men’s Doubles title at Melbourne with Thanasi Kokkinakis. He has been absolutely ruthless this week at Indian Wells. He got past the likes of Sebastian Baez and Federico Delbonis in the opening rounds before beating 8th seed Casper Ruud in the third round. He then got a walkover from Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.

This could very well be the match of the tournament. Kyrgios going up face-to-face against any of the big 3 is always interesting to watch and given the intensity of their previous meetings, expect nothing less than fireworks in the desert. Nadal will definitely start the favorite and is in amazing form. He will look to extend his unbeaten streak to 19-0. But Nick’s recent form has been ruthless. He has pummelled past all his opponents convincingly this week and given his unorthodox nature, he is likely to trouble Nadal.
The Spaniard will have to be extra precautions on Kyrgios’s serve. Nadal tends to return from deep in the court and the Aussie will look to take advantage of that with his underarm serves. Expect some high-quality tennis mixed with a lot of drama. Nadal is likely to have a hard-fought victory and in doing so, will extend his unbeaten streak to 19-0.
