Aslan Karatsev vs Jeremy Chardy: Preview

Aslan Karatsev who reached his career-high ranking of world number 24 last month made his Olympic debut at Tokyo. Karatsev has had a great run on the ATP Tour this year. He made his Grand Slam debut at the 2021 Australian Open after coming through qualifying. He also notched his first top-10 victory in Australia after upsetting Diego Schwartzman. He also beat top seeded players, Felix Auger Aliassime and Grigor Dimitrov to reach the semifinals where he eventually lost to Novak Djokovic. He became the first player to reach a Grand Slam semifinal on debut in the Open Era history. Karatsev later won his first ATP title in Dubai.
Karatsev is seeded number 11 at Tokyo and faced America’s Tommy Paul in the first round. He got off to a great start and eased past Paul in just 75 minutes. He never gave the American a chance to break throughout the entire match and himself converted 2 out of 3 break points to win the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. At the end of the match, Karatsev won a total of 34 points with Paul winning 20.
Jeremy Chardy is currently ranked number 68 in the world and is playing at his debut Olympics in Tokyo. He has won one ATP Tour singles title in Stuttgart in 2009. He made his career-high ranking of 25 in 2013 where he made his best ever grand slam finish by reaching the quarter finals of the 2013 Australian Open.
Chardy looked comfortable on the hard court in the first round when he played against Chile’s Tomas Barrios. The Frenchman eased past the first set in 28 minutes after breaking Barrios twice. However, the second set proved to be more challenging with either players not being able to catch a break leading the set to go to a tiebreak. Chardy won the tiebreak in the second set, closing out the match in 1 hour 30 minutes.
