Canadian teen sensation Leylah Fernandez has been the find of the 2021 US Open and has become a household name in just 2 weeks. She has overcome a very tough draw despite being ranked outside the top 70. Before the tournament, Leylah only had 4 main draw wins in 6 grand slam appearances, and this fortnight, she has won 6 consecutive matches to reach the final.
Leylah has beaten some of the biggest names on the WTA tour in this tournament. She has three sets victories over defending champion Naomi Osaka, World No.1 Elina Svitolina, 2016 US Open champion and former World No.1 Angelique Kerber and in the semifinals, got the better of World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka to reach her maiden major final.
Leylah, who turned 19 a few days back on September 6, is accompanied by her family at the US Open. Her mother and her sisters are seen cheering for her in her box while her father, who is also her coach, is cheering for her, is planning her matches from home as he couldn’t travel to New York.
The young Canadian even addressed the importance of her mother in of her post matches speeches, saying what a support she has been in this tournament. Her mother, Irene Fernandez, is most of the times seen animated in her box, cheering her heart out for her young daughter.
On court, Leylah will play the biggest match of her life on Saturday when she faces fellow teenager Emma Raducanu in the final of the 2021 US Open.
