To everyone’s surprise, the women’s singles final of the 2021 US Open featured two teenagers, Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez. This was the first time in 20 years that two teenagers were playing a major final.

Taking inspiration from them, Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti spoke on how this feat will inspire the NextGen. Musetti shocked the world earlier this year at the French Open where he reached the Round of 16 and took the opening two sets against top seed Novak Djokovic before retiring from the match.

Ahead of the Astana Open, Musetti spoke about how he’s good friends with Leylah and how he hopes to join them performance wise. “I’m good friends with Leylah, it was unexpected, also for her,” the Italian said.

“We are 18, 19 [year]s in age, [and] it motivates me a lot… They played really well, they’ve trained really hard, everyone is sacrificing, but when you have talent and sacrifice, that’s a good combination. They did it and they deserve what they achieved. I hope to join them”.

This year’s NextGen Finals will be held in Milan and will feature 8 of the best upcoming stars. Musetti is currently 6th in the Race to Milan and is hopeful to qualify and go deep in the finals which will be held on his home soil. “I’m really looking forward to this [and] I hope to qualify,” said Musetti.

“I think it would be really special for me to play in Milan, in front of a home crowd. It’s not so far from my hometown [Carrara]. I think if I qualify, I’ll make sure it’s a good event for me. I’m trying to go forward as far as possible here to take points to qualify”.

Meanwhile, Musetti bowed out of the Round of 16 of the Astana Open to Laslo Djere in three tight sets.
