‘Sebastian Korda has got such a great game, I think he will win a Grand Slam by 2023,’ says Martina Navratilova
Sebastian Korda is fast becoming one of the players to watch out for in the future. The American has been taking leap strides forward in the ATP tour this year. To kick start 2021, he made the finals of Delray Beach, before going down to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.
Later, Korda moved to play the Miami Masters, where he lost in the quarters. Taking the momentum on the European clay court swing, the 21-year-old won his maiden ATP tour title in Parma by beating Italian Marco Cecchinato. Amazingly, the American ended up winning the whole tournament without dropping a single set.
Although he hasn’t been consistent on the hard courts in the ongoing North American season, he is billed as one of the players to watch out for. Recently, tennis legend Martina Navratilova spoke to the Tennis Channel about the prodigious talent of Korda and even predicted that the youngster will soon win a Grand Slam.
“He’s got such a great game, a great outlook. I think if not next year, I would say also 2023 would be a year for him,” the 64-year-old opined.
“Also a matter of time. Seb Korda, a complete player, he keeps his head about him. First time I saw him play I’m like, ‘he’s already been here, in his previous life,’ I don’t know. He’s been coached so well by his parents,” the holder of 18-Grand Slams added.
I am better than my father: Seb Korda
As most tennis fans would be aware, Sebastian is the son of former ATP player Petr Korda, who won the Australian Open in 1998. The Senior Korda also reached the finals of the French Open in 1992. Petr even attained a career-high ranking No.2 on the ATP charts.
Upon asked to comment by a journalist on who is the better player between the father and son, Sebastian said, “I think me actually. I had a better ranking. And I don’t think he’d won a title yet. So I’m taking me.”
Currently, the youngster is playing the San Diego tournament. He beat fellow American Tommy Paul in three sets in the opening round. The World No.41 will next lock horns against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego.
