Medvedev has had a mixed season this time around. He was knocked out in the very first round at Halle Open, however, he went on to win the 2021 Mallorca Open after that. Post that, he had a forgettable outing at the 2021 Wimbledon as well as in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where he struggled to maintain his form in extreme heat and humidity.
In the round of 32, the top seed came through 4-6 6-3 6-4 against Alexander Bublik in a match that also saw a 53-minute rain delay and Medvedev was denied a bathroom break to change his underwear.
James Duckworth began the 2021 season by defeating Ugo Humbert in the 2021 Murray River Open, his first win over a top-50 opponent in more than four years. In the second round, he was beaten by Karen Khachanov, the 12th seed.
His greatest performance so far came at Challengers Nur-Sultan 2, when he reached the tournament’s quarterfinals. He was then defeated in three sets by Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran. He won his first-round clash against Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-4.
