Daniil Medvedev has been the standout performer on the hard courts this season with a 50-6 record since last November. The Russian, who is the second seed at the tournament, would be licking his lips at the prospect of playing a Qualifier for a spot in the semi-finals of a Masters 1000 event.

Medvedev has been simply outstanding in 2021, winning his first ever Grand Slam title at the US Open in August. He will be aiming for a strong finish to the year as he prepares to defend his title at the year end ATP Finals in Turin. 

Young Frenchman, Hugo Gaston has become a real discovery of the current tournament. The Qualifier has been turning heads by reaching this late stage of the competition. He has defeated some big names so far here in his home tournament, such as Kevin Anderson and Lorenzo Musetti in the Qualifiers, and then Pablo Carreno Busta and Carlos Alcaraz in the main draw. In his last match against Alcaraz, Hugo was already a set plus 5-0 down in the second only to comeback and win the match from that juncture against a formidable opponent like Alcaraz. This speaks for the 21 year-old’s never give up attitude.

This is all unfamiliar territory for the young Frenchman and he is playing with nothing to lose. While he has been great so far, playing Daniil Medvedev is a whole new level for him and is expected to struggle here.

In this duel, a significant preference should be boldly given to Medvedev. Gaston is a Frenchman who loves playing in Paris. At last year’s Roland Garros, he delighted the audience by upsetting former champion Stan Wawrinka. On Thursday, he was down in both sets to Carlos Alcaraz, even falling behind 0-5 in the second, yet managed to win in straight sets all thanks to the vigor of the crowd.

But it’s hard to imagine the 103^rd ranked player upsetting the US Open champion, despite how involved the French crowd becomes. Hugo Gaston is a very promising young player with a bright future but he does not have anywhere near the required firepower nor consistency to be able to defeat the World No.2.

Gaston should be very proud of his exploits this week, but he will go down quickly here, as the Russian superstar books his spot in the semi-finals.
