“I think I played a great match!”: Podoroska on defeating Serena Williams

‘Champions go with a whimper’, and Serena Williams seems to be heading that way. Since becoming a mother in 2017, Williams has won just one WTA Title, the ABC Classic in January 2020. The general belief is that Williams is holding on to add to her Grand Slam collection.

She is on 23 Grand slam trophies at the moment, and desperately wants to surpass the no. 24 that Margaret Court has won. But with each passing year, and the arrival of new extremely talented tennis players, the probability of Williams adding to her tally is diminishing rapidly.

Serena Williams faced a disappointing return to tennis, after almost three months out, when she succumbed to a straight set loss to Nadia Podoroska. Last seen in the Australian Open, fans were hoping to see their favourite player mark her return with a victory on clay. But, Nadia Podoroska had other plans as she beat the American 7-6 7-5 in the second round of the Italian Open.

After the match, Podoroska said, “She didn’t play a tournament for a while, so I knew that maybe she did too many mistakes at the beginning or I have to push her to do them. But I think I played a great match.”

Serena Williams who is currently preparing for the French Open has accepted a wild-card invitation to play at the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma starting on the 16th of May of this month.

Maybe Serena too realizes that she is not going to play on for too long, so In the last few years she has been focusing on her business, adding new ventures, trying to cash in on her stardom. Since 2014, Serena Williams has invested in at least 50 odd new start ups through her venture capital firm, Serena Ventures. And then there is the S by Serena fashion label she founded in 2018.

It’s a direct to consumer clothing line, with personal touches from Serena. She has recently signed a deal with Amazon prime video, to shoot a documentary series called ‘Yours truly’. Fans can expect to see a different side to Williams in the docu series, see her relationship with her daughter, her husband and maybe sister too.
