World No.2 Naomi Osaka’s continues to get entangled into the media mess. From what started as a protest in attending mandatory press conference at the 2021 French Open, getting fined by the authorities to skipping major tournaments, the Japanese girl has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons in the past few months.
While she was seen at the Tokyo Olympics a few weeks ago, her performance was below par and there is already much turbulence happening in Osaka’s life, with the media across the globe.
As the four-time Grand Slam champion gets ready to prepare for the upcoming US Open, she is currently playing the tournament in Cincinnati. Once again, the 23-year-old got caught in the media saga in yet another press conference.
Amidst her press conference, Paul Daugherty, a journalist from the Cincinnati Enquirer posed some tricky questions to Osaka.
“You’re not crazy about dealing with us, especially in this format. Yet you have a lot of outside interests that are served by having a media platform. I guess my question is: How do you balance the two? And also, do you have anything you’d like to share with us about what you did say to Simone Biles?
“Well, you have said you don’t especially like the press conference format,” Daugherty said. “Yet, that seems to be obviously the most widely used means of communicating to the media and through the media to the public.”
In response, Naomi came up with her own straight reply.
“Um, I mean, for me, I feel like this is something that I can’t – I can’t really speak for everybody,” Naomi Osaka said. “I can only speak for myself. But ever since I was younger, I have had a lot of media interest on me, and I think it’s because of my background as well as, you know, how I play. Because in the first place, I’m a tennis player. That’s why a lot of people are interested in me.”
‘We get fined if we don’t do press conferences, but sometimes we feel really sad’: Naomi Osaka
Much to the surprise of all, Osaka was once again seen walking out of the room, teary-eyed, unable to answer any more questions. Later, Osaka’s agent Stuart Duguid also slammed Daugherty, calling him a “bully.”
Interestingly, the Japanese girl had also opined on how she would like to deal with the media in an enclosed manner, to maintain privacy.
“We get fined if we don’t do press conferences, but sometimes we feel really sad, and maybe there should be a rule that we could take a sick day from that and respond to you guys in e-mails,” the defending US Open champion opined.
