Spaniard prodigy Carlos Alcaraz has been the breakthrough performer of the year. He created history by becoming the youngest World No 1 in the history of tennis as he won his maiden Grand Slam singles title at the 2022 US Open. But he withdrew from the ATP Finals citing an abdominal injury that abruptly ended his 2022 campaign. Alex Corretja isn’t surprised by his injuries despite his incredible performances throughout the year.
He has won four ATP titles in the year and managed to reach at least the fourth round in most of the tournaments of the year. He has craved his name among the champions at such a young age. One of the remarkable performances of the year was at the Madrid Open when Carlos Alcaraz defeated the Top 3 seeds to clinch the sixth ATP title of his career.
Former Spanish champion Corretja believes that he was bound to get injured since it has been quite a challenging year for him physically and mentally. He isn’t left surprised with his injury concerns after he withdrew from the quarter-finals at the Paris Masters. He further claimed that he needs to take it positively to come out stronger in the next year.
During an interview, Corretja said that “The efforts delivered by Alcaraz were immense, too much, to the point where it was almost impossible not to get injured. What happened is… I can’t say that he went straight from 0 to 10 but let’s say from 4 to 10, and it takes a huge mental and physical demand; it’s very difficult to deal with. All this is a lesson for him, he’s learning, and he has a team around him that knows exactly what it takes to be at the top.“
Following his train of thoughts, he added “They too must learn how Carlos’ body reacts to the matches, in the media glare, with the intensity needed to be at the top and his will to keep the number one spot. I don’t think what happened to him is surprising. It is only logical to me for him to get exhausted at the end of such a season. I am convinced that they will find an adequate schedule next year for Carlos to keep winning the big tournaments.“
Carlos Alcaraz faced an abdominal injury that forced to end his 2022 campaign

The 2022 US Open champion had been a formidable competitor throughout the year and was quite consistent in the Tour. But he faced a small glicth when he started feeling uncomfortable during the semifinal clash against Felix Auger Aliassime at the Swiss Indoors. After further scans and examinations, he clarified to be completely fit to play.
But soon Carlos Alcaraz faced a major setback when he withdrew in Bercy citing some discomfort. Later examination found out that he needed at least 6 weeks of rest for his abdominal tear. He took to his social media account to announce about his end to the year and stated it as a precautionary move in order not to aggrevate his injury. He withdrew from the ATP Finals in Turin and as well as from the Davis Cup.
