Alexander Zeverv, 22nd-seed, reached another quarterfinal at a Grand Slam tournament, and his fifth Roland Garros quarter-final. He will square off against Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Wednesday (June 7) on Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris.
The 26-year-old breezed past 28th-seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-1,6-4, 6-3 in the previous round on Court Philippe-Chatrier in two hours and 12 minutes, but the win did not come that easily as he faced a bit of trouble after leading 3-0 in the third set. But after the win, at the post-match conference, a journalist asked him the reason why his fans call him a lion on social media. And instead of answering straight, he came up with a rather hilarious answer.
He said the lion’s lifestyle doesn’t sound too bad but netizens might call him this owing to his hairstyle and screaming. “Yeah, what is it, lions sleep 18 hours a day and have s** for four hours a day and then eat for two? Doesn’t sound too bad for me, to be honest (smiling).“
“I don’t know how to answer that, to be honest. That’s probably a little bit has to do with the haircut, a little bit with screaming,” Zverev added.
Alexander Zverev will face Tomas Martin Etcheverry next
Talking about Alexander Zverev’s 2023 French Open campaign, he played his first-round match after a semifinal loss to Nicolas Jarry in Geneva Open. In the ongoing tournament, he knocked out the likes of Llyod Harris, Alex Molcan, Frances Tiafoe, and Grigor Dimitrov.
49th-ranked Tomas Martin Etcheverry, on the other hand, reached his first quarterfinal at a Grand Slam event. The Argentine defeated Jack Draper, Alex de Minaur, Borna Coric, and Yoshihito Nishioka in the previous rounds. After beating Grigor Dimitrov, Zverev improved his win-loss record to 20-14 this year and 27-7 at the clay-court Grand Slam. Etcheverry is on 19-12 this season, 5-5 in Grand Slams, and 4-1 at French Open.
The players will be clashing against each other for the first time. And if Zverev is able to get past the Argentine, his next opponents can be Holger Rune and Casper Ruud, and a blockbuster semifinal is expected. Though Etcheverry is having a dream run at the French Open, beating the German won’t be an easy task for him.
