Alexander Zverev claimed his second title of the season, as he defeated Roman Safiullin to lift the Chengdu Open title. The top seed defeated the Russian in three sets to end a promising week of tennis. The German was overjoyed after his victory and felt that he was slowly getting back to his best after a rough period last year.
Zverev has been delivering consistent results over the past couple of months, which includes a quarterfinal run at the US Open, and a title at the German Open as well. He was delighted with the level of tennis he had been playing off-late. The German also heaped praise on Roman Safiullin for being a worthy opponent in the finals. The top seed had to come back from a set down to claim the victory.
The German revealed that he was all out of sorts until midway through the second set when he finally found some momentum. “I had a very difficult time last year. But I’m coming back now and I hope it continues like this. I played really good tennis this week, but then I came out here and didn’t know what to do for a set and a half. Obviously, I’m happy to be able to come back and to win this title,” said Zverev after his win in the finals.

Alexander Zverev believes Roman Safiullin is playing the ‘best tennis’ of his life
Roman Safiullin has himself had a year to remember, given his results this season. The Russian has been on the receiving end of several injuries, but has finally started being a consistent performer. Alexander Zverev believes that Safiullin has been playing some of the best tennis of his life, and stated that he could beat some top-ranked players in the coming days.
“He’s playing the best tennis of his life for sure. The way he was winning this week, I think he beat a lot of great players quite easily, so I knew that he was playing well,” added Zverev post win over the Russian.
Zverev had a busy schedule ahead of him, as he will now compete at the China Open this week. He will face the Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the opening round encounter on Thursday. He is seeded 8th at the China Open, as the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev return to action. The German will have one eye on the race to the Nitto ATP Finals, where he is now ranked 7th after his victory in Chengdu.
