Caroline Wozniacki returned to the tennis courts this year after announcing her retirement in 2020. The Danish tennis star competed in Cincinnati and Montreal, before receiving a wildcard for the 2023 US Open. Former American pro Alexandra Stevenson opined on the not-so-surprising return of Wozniacki.
Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams have been quite vocal when it comes to the pay disparity in tennis. Alexandra Stevenson was recently asked about her injury-marred career and the return of players like Wozniacki to the tour. She believes that money was a key factor in the return of the 2018 Australian Open champion, as she would have had plenty of lucrative proposals on offer.
Alexandra Stevenson believes that Wozniacki had the liberty of having the finances to return to tennis. She also spoke about Venus Williams, who does not compete on tour that often. “Regarding the return of Caroline Wozniacki, it’s a totally different situation. She was ranked first in the world, she has unlimited invitations and millions of dollars. So she has the finances to do it, just like Venus Williams has the finances to continue,” Stevenson added.

Stevenson, now associated with ESPN, revealed that she did not have the financial means to continue playing back in the day. The American was once ranked 18th in the world, but constant injuries somehow managed to derail her career. “I knew I had to build a team, but I didn’t have the financial means, and that’s something people don’t realize, you need financial means,” she said, as quoted by WeLoveTennis.

On the other hand, Caroline Wozniacki had quite an impressive return to tennis, as she managed to reach the fourth round of the 2023 US Open. She was defeated by the eventual champion Coco Gauff in the last 16, who was simply in the form of her life. The Danish tennis star retired from tennis in 2020, on the back of successive injury setbacks.
Caroline Wozniacki has declared that she will not compete at any of the upcoming tournaments for the remainder of the 2023 season. She eyes a return at the Australian Open early next year, a title which she won back in 2018. The former world number one has performed well in Melbourne over the years, and will certainly back her chances to have a decent run once again.
