In a hilarious banter between the two of them, Andrey Rublev calls friend and compatriot Daniil Medvedev ‘Octopus’ on account of his weird on-court movement. The Russians have always acknowledged their long-term friendship. They had both grown up together on the junior circuit and now they are playing together on the ATP tour.
The Russian duo have always been known for their close friendship. Both players have come from similar backgrounds and have played in a lot of the same tournaments during their junior years. Recently, Daniil Medvedev has named Andrey Rublev godfather to his daughter Alisa Medvedev, who was born in October 2022.
Recently a hilarious video between the two has emerged which shows Rublev calling his friend ‘Octopus’. “For some reason it became pretty viral that I play chess, ” said Medvedev. However, Rublev was not willing to accept the nickname ‘chessmaster’ for his compatriot. Instead, he seemed to hold on to the name ‘Octopus’ despite coaxing from Medvedev. “Have you see how he moves? No co-ordination. Every shot is completely different. One arm is half court already covered, then one leg is there. Passing shot out of nowhere,” joked Rublev justifying as to why he called Medvedev ‘Octopus’.
Nevertheless, despite such hilarious banter between the friends, they have time and again established that they were each other’s best friends on the tour. In spite of their heavy battles in court, the duo have proved that it would never affect their relationship off-court.

Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev have always shared a sound relationship
The Russians Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev have been playing together since they were seven years old. The longevity of their relationship seems to have a positive effect on the players as it has created a deep bond between them instead of a rift.
Rublev has always mentioned that Medvedev was one of the toughest fighters he had to face in the juniors. Both players have also always established that they have the deepest respect for each other. Their relationship runs so deep that Medvedev has entrusted the responsibility of being godfather to his daughter Alisa to Rublev himself. Such is the relationship between the Russians.
However, on the court, only one man can win. They have faced each other on the court eight times now, with Medvedev winning six of these encounters. The last time they encountered each other on the court was at the 2023 US Open quarter-final match where Medvedev won. However, these tough battles on the court do not seem to have an impact on their relationship.
