The 2022 French Open and the US Open finalist Casper Ruud defeated the rookie Andrey Rublev, in the semi-finals, to book a date in the Championship match of the 2022 ATP Finals against Novak Djokovic. The Norwegian beat the Russian in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Everybody expected Andrey Rublev to be disappointed with the result, which he was, but he also praised Casper Ruud for how he played in the semi-final match. The 25-year-old believes that many people often underestimate Casper Ruud.

I think they will realize. It just takes time because it’s the first year when he do such a great results that he never did before. Not many players did two Grand Slam finals. He did one more final now. It takes time. They will understand next year when he keeps playing the same way, keep beating top players. They will see. It takes time.” When questioned about Casper Ruud and his performance this season, and particularly in the 2022 ATP Finals, Andrey Rublev noted.

Casper Ruud will be looking to win the biggest prize of his career. He failed to reach the final of this tournament last time around, but this time he would love to make it happen.

Andrey Rublev’s dream season came to an end when he lost the semi-final match against Casper Ruud in the ATP Finals. He won 4 ATP singles titles and one doubles title this year. He started the season by playing in the Australian Open but lost to Marin Cilic in the third round.

He came back strongly to reach the semi-final round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. Here, he was defeated by Felix Auger Aliassime. Soon after, he won his first ATP singles title this year by clinching the Dubai Duty-Free with both Tennis Championships. He then won the Open 13 Provence tournament both singles and doubles titles. His partner in crime was Ukrainian Denys Molchanov.

The 2021 Davis Cup winner reached the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Open. Here, he was defeated by Taylor Fritz in straight sets. He won the Serbia Open by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Championship match. He played in the Italian Open and the Madrid Open in the run-up to the French Open, but could not do much.

At Roland Garros, he again lost to Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals. He reached the quarter-finals round of the US Open but lost to Frances Tiafoe. His qualification for the 2022 ATP Finals doubtful but his victory in Gijon Open helped his cause. He achieved his career’s highest ranking of World No.7 just before the start of the ATP Finals.

He stunned the world by defeating 2019 ATP Finals winner Stefanos Tsitsipas and 2020 ATP Finals winner Daniil Medvedev to advance into the semi-finals from his group. For the first time, this can be considered an impressive achievement. However, expectations will be much higher from the Russian next year as he will take on the world’s best players.
