Estonian tennis player Anett Kontaveit is facing a major downfall in the rankings after her withdrawal from multiple tournaments. The 27-year-old is expected to fall out of the top 50 following her pull-out of Doha and Dubai. Her absence in these events is set to cost her around 1000 points which will be enough to do the damage.
Kontaveit was second-ranked before the US Open last year. Since then she faced some tough times maintaining her form due to various reasons. The current World No. 18 was forced to retire due to a lower back injury during her second-round match in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
The injury is definitely going to impact her tennis calendar forcing her to sit out for some weeks. Currently, there is no information about the seriousness of the injury and how much time she will need to recover totally. Earlier, she was looking forward to the two important WTA events, Doha and Dubai, but the unfortunate injury crashed her hopes.
Kontaveit’s fall has been just as quick as her rise to the World No 2 spot
The first half of the last season was exceptional for the Estonian player. Kontaveit ascended to fifth place in the ranking following her exploits at the beginning of 2022. Later, she continued her scale to the top of the rankings. After her final appearance at the Qatar Ladies Open against Iga Swiatek, Konteveit rose to fourth place.
In Wimbledon, she entered as the second seed but could not move past the second round. Even after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round of the French Open, Kontaveit reached a career-high ranking of world No. 2 in June 2022. After that things started falling apart for her. Kontaveit tried to cover some lost ground but it did not last.
In the US Open, she was ousted by the tennis legend Serena Williams in the second round. It completed Kontaveit’s subpar major record in 2022, having never made it past the second round. The 2023 season did not bring her a change in fortune as she lost to Zheng Qinwen in the first round of the Adelaide International.
