After Aryna Sabalenka’s second-round win against Varvara Gracheva, the tennis professional was interviewed on the court. However, more interestingly, it wasn’t the usual interview that happened, as the Wimbledon interviewer caused a blunder by asking Aryna about her performance last year. As expected, fans were quick to react and share their opinions on Twitter. 

For the uninitiated, last year at Wimbledon, Russians and Belarussians were not allowed to participate in the prestigious event due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Aryna is a Belarusian player, so for the interviewer to make such a mistake made everyone call out Wimbledon and their professionalism. They are already under a lot of criticism this year for their bad scheduling of matches.

Aryna dropped the first set 2-6, won a close second set 7-5, and eventually bagged the final set and the match 6-2. The Belarussian player will be aiming for her first Wimbledon title and her second Grand Slam following her Australian Open triumph this year, defeating Elena Rybakina 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Fans call Wimbledon’s media management pathetic

On-court interviews are usually questions about the match, the opponent, support, and light-hearted questions. However, this particular interview took a gasping turn when the interviewer asked Belarusian player Aryna about her performance last year. 

Fans were quick to call out Wimbledon for their poor media management and even called them Unprofessional. Some of the users even point out how underwhelming the interviews were for the matches that day. This year, Wimbledon is receiving major backlash for many reasons, including how the tournament was refusing to use the roof despite the rain delays and their ‘80-minute roof policy’.

As expected, Aryna visibly looked uncomfortable for obvious reasons but went on with the interview despite the question. Few fans think it was a slip by the interviewer and that they meant to ask about her performance two years ago instead of last year, and that’s why she didn’t say anything.

Aryna will be facing off against Russian Anna Blinkova in the third round of the tournament.
