All hopes around Holger Rune came crashing down yesterday at the 2024 Australian Open. The 8th-seeded Dane was up against World No. 122 Arthur Cazaux at the Margaret Court Arena and was the favorite for the clash.
Things however turned out differently as the French wildcard entrant caused one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
Cazaux announced himself to the tennis world with a stunning 7-6(4), 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Rune. The French youngster picked the stage as one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport to bring the spotlight on him.
The win was also special given Rune’s fantastic form coming into the Major having finished runner-up in Brisbane.
The hype around Rune was massive given his performances over the past two seasons. The Dane has been seen alongside Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz as the trio to replace the Big 3.
With German great Boris Becker and Roger Federer‘s former coach Severin Luthi coaching him, only big things were expected from the 8th seed at Melbourne Park but it was not to be, at least for this year.
Boris Becker blamed for Holger Rune’s loss in the Australian Open
As fans poured their praise for the Frenchman, Holger Rune’s camp only received some harsh words for such an unpredictable loss so early at the Grand Slam.
The maximum criticism was targeted at Boris Becker who has been with the Dane since the final few months of the 2023 season and has spent good time with Rune.
Fans were quick to react to Rune’s loss and took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to make their feelings clear.
To Rune and Becker’s misfortune, the German who emerged victorious at the Major in 1991 and 1996, has not been granted a visa to enter Australia. While the official reason has not been made public, speculation remains over the German’s prison spell in the UK that has him banned from entering the country for another 10 years.
Disappointing as it be, the Rune camp will now have to strategize smartly on their next steps going into the season.
With February bringing a mix of clay and hard court events, Rune will have to prioritize his schedule. Having reached the fourth round last year at the Australian Open, a second-round exit also saw him lose points.
But he’s most likely to remain within the Top-10 when the rankings are updated at the end of the Australian Open.
