World No. 70 Camila Giorgi made a blazing start to her 2023 Australian Open campaign. Up against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who’s returning from an injury, Giorgi won the match 6-0, 6-1. She had earlier played in the Adelaide 2 in the qualifiers losing her first match itself. She has bounced back well in Melbourne however.

Her 2022 season ended after her second-round defeat to Madison Keys. Since then, she has been caught up in a controversy. Italian doctor Daniela Grillone was arrested from Italy last year for handing out fake Covid-19 vaccination certificates. During her inquiry, she dragged Giorgi’s name through the mud as well.

Giorgi came into legal crossfire with doubts raised over the legitimacy of her vaccination certificates. From Day 1, the player has denied all charges and pleaded innocent in all the media trials. During her press conference following her round one win, she once again maintained her innocence and instead blamed the doctor.

“The problems are on that doctor, not on me. She had problems with the law multiple times. I took my vaccines in different places. I’m very calm, otherwise, I wouldn’t come here and play. I did just once vaccination with her, and the other ones I did with other doctors. So, I’m fine, and…she’s in trouble with the law in Italy. So, after it’s she’s going to see,” said Giorgi addressing the press.

Following the first-round win, Camila Giorgi will now take on Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the second round. It will be the second meeting between the two Europeans. They had earlier met in the finals of the 2015 Katowice Open in Poland which was won by Schmiedlova.

The Slovakian is a qualifier this year at the Australian Open. After three consecutive straight-set wins in the qualifiers, she beat Italian Martina Trevisan in the first round in another straight-set win. Another Italian date is now set for Schmiedlova.

Giorgi continues the battle to prove her innocence. Kudos to WTA as well for not rushing into any decision and allowing Giorgi to play unless concrete evidence is found against her if at all she is guilty.
