Hubert Hurkacz has been on a constant rise since the start of the season and has been very consistent. He reached the semifinal of the Dubai Tennis Championships and the repeated the same at the Miami Masters. He had a decent clay season where he reached the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo and Madrid before a Round of 16 finish at the French Open. He then won the Halle Open on grass ahead of Wimbledon. This week in Montreal, he battled past Emil Ruusuvuori in the opening round before beating Albert Ramos Vinolas and Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios. In the semifinal, he defeated French Open runner-up Casper Ruud in three sets 5-7,6-3,6-2 to reach his second Masters final.
Pablo Carreno Busta has had a mixed season so far but underperformed massively in the first half. After reaching the Round of 16 of the Australian Open, he was knocked out of early rounds at Rio, Acapulco, Indian Wells, and Miami. He then made it to the Round of 16 of the Monte Carlo Masters and backed it up with a runner-up finish at the Barcelona Open. Another string of poor performances continued till Wimbledon after which he reached the semifinal of the Swedish Open. In Canada this week, he stunned Matteo Berrettini in the opening round and then got past the likes of Holger Rune and 7th seed Jannik Sinner. In the quarterfinal, he defeated Jack Draper and the got the better of Dan Evans in the semifinals in three sets 7-5,6-7(7),6-2.
This will be the third meeting between the duo. The H2H stands deadlock at 1-1. They last met at Metz last year where Hurkacz won in straight sets.
