Martina Navratilova is a tennis legend. The Hall Of Famer is a former world No.1 player and 18-time GrandSlam champion. She was diagnosed with throat cancer and while diagnosing it the doctors found out that she also had an unrelated early-stage breast cancer.
Martina Navratilova was diagnosed with cancer in January and became cancer free in March, thanks to radiation therapy. Martina Navratilova was recently awarded the Racchetta d’Oro (Golden racket) at the 2023 Italian Open. During an interview with TalkTV’s Piers Morgan, Martina Navratilova said that she was cancer free according to the doctors.
During her Golden Racket acceptance speech at the Foro Italico, Navratilova said, “Many of you know I’ve had a difficult year, but I’m fine now. I’m grateful for obvious reasons to be here with you, I’ve always loved Italy. My first tournament in Rome was in 1973, I’ve always loved ice cream. Tennis has given me an amazing life for which I am very grateful, I have always tried to reciprocate, both on the court and after retirement,”.She also spoke about her love for Italy and Italy’s ice cream.
She added, “The passion you show for the sport is exactly what I feel, for this in Italy I have always felt at home. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the memories from the past and also for today. I appreciate this day that I will always remember,”.
Navratilova initially retired in 1994. She had won a record 167 singles titles and spent 331 weeks at No. 1 in the WTA rankings. She returned in 2000 to play doubles but occasionally competed in singles too.

Boris Becker who is a six-time Grand Slam champion and former world No.1 shared his joy about seeing Martina Navratilova’s appearance at the 2023 Italian Open on Sunday. Navratilova was invited to address the crowd in Rome.

Martina Navratilova is a prominent figure in tennis and had an incredible career that spanned over 3 decades.
