Carlos Alcaraz missed out on an opportunity to play at the Monte-Carlo Masters this season. This was due to an injury that he sustained during his semi-final round match against Jannik Sinner at the Miami Open.

He is now ready for the Barcelona Open. He will enter the courts as the defending champion. However, there is another exciting factor that is motivating him to deliver his best in this ATP 500 event. The Spaniard wants to rekindle his rivalry with Jannik Sinner.

In an interaction with the journalists on the sidelines of the Barcelona Open, he talked about how his rivalry with the current World No.8 is special for him. He also wishes that his rivalry with the Italian can develop into as competitive as the rivalry between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.

“We’re both very young and have fought for great things, and every time we play it’s fun to watch. I hope to have with Sinner the same rivalry that existed between Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. With Jannik we also get along very well off the pitch,” he said.

Their rivalry is also going to be a highlight of this tournament because of the absence of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Daniil Medvedev from this year’s competition.

The rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz is being touted as the next big rivalry of the sport. The two also like to play against each other. They also have had ample opportunities to test each other in various ATP tournaments in their respective careers.

Both players have met six times in their careers. However, both have won 3 matches each. Their first meeting on the ATP Tour took place in the first round of the Paris Masters 2021. Carlos Alcaraz won that match 7-6 (7/1), 7-5. However, Jannik Sinner soon pulled two back by winning in the fourth round of the Wimbledon 2022 and then in the final of the Croatia Open 2022.

The Spaniard was soon able to beat the Italian in the Quarter-final round of the US Open 2022 and the semi-final round of the Indian Wells Open 2023. However, Jannik Sinner brought the rivalry to equality by winning in the semi-final round of the Miami Open 2023.
