Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has put Carlos Alcaraz in the same bracket as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in terms of being the title favorite at any tournament they take part in. Medvedev feels the young Spaniard is in such a form that he is the top title contender or among the top two (when Novak Djokovic is also participating) in any tournament he starts.
Medvedev made these comments when he was asked to predict the title favorites at the Shanghai Masters and draw a comparison between Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner who has recently come out as the new rival of the Spaniard. The Russian said that while Alcaraz is like Nadal and Djokovic considering his form at the moment, Sinner is in great shape.
He further talked about the Italian saying Sinner needs to adapt to the physical fitness it demands to perform consistently on the tour (considering the Italian won the title in Beijing). But Medvedev still backed the 22-year-old to come good on Shanghai despite Carlos Alcaraz being in superb form. “It’s hard to say. I would say that in general, if we talk about form at the moment, Carlos is a player like Djokovic and Nadal were before,” said Medvedev.
“Every time he’s in a tournament, he’s the biggest, or when Novak is there, one of the two biggest title contenders. Jannik (Sinner) is in great shape, let’s see how he can adapt physically to playing in Beijing last week. So I would say they are the two biggest favorites. But at the same time, that’s why we love tennis. But we’ll see. That’s why tennis is interesting, you never know what’s going to happen,” he further added.
Who between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner is more likely to win in Shanghai?
While Daniil Medvedev has picked both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as the title favorites, it is to be seen who eventually wins the ATP 1000 tournament. Both Alcaraz and Sinner have started really nicely. While Sinner has won his first two matches convincingly, Alcaraz also registered an emphatic win in the second round, beating Gregoire Barrere 6-2, 7-5.
The Spaniard will now face Daniel Evans in the third round. On the other hand, Jannik Sinner will meet US Open semifinalist Ben Shelton in the fourth round. The Italian had no trouble beating his opponents- Marcos Giron and Sebastian Baez in the first two matches. However, he will have an uphill task against Shelton who is known for his bullet serves.
If all goes well and Alcaraz and Sinner meet in the final, it will be upon the Spaniard to level the scores as Sinner had beaten him in China. The Italian leads the head-to-head 4-3 at the moment. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev will also look to sneak in, at least into the semis.
