Former World No. 1 Andre Agassi recently turned commentator. The American great called the action in Las Vegas for the Netflix Slam. It was the exhibition match organized by the OTT giants that saw Rafael Nadal take on rising star Carlos Alcaraz.
The rise of Alcaraz has been nothing but phenomenal. He has already won two Grand Slam singles titles. He won his maiden singles Major at the US Open in 2022 followed by the Wimbledon crown in 2023.
His win in the Flushing Meadows saw him break Lleyton Hewitt‘s long-standing record to become the youngest World No. 1. His win over Novak Djokovic at last year’s Wimbledon further boosted his status as the future of the sport.
With various laurels at a young age, the young Spaniard is already making a big name for himself. But for Agassi, there are certain aspects where he can still improve to unlock his full potential. The Olympian praised Alcaraz’s game and his ability to use his pace for court coverage.
But he felt the current World No. 2 finds himself in trouble if he’s unable to move his feet much. The struggle of channeling his energy through the right medium often takes a toll on his shots as per Agassi.
When I look at Alcaraz’s ability to bring such an upside, he will struggle with keeping the reins on and not necessarily having to do more than he needs to, in the majority of his matches. All greats figure out what their game is built on and they rely on that in the biggest moments.Said Agassi speaking with Tennis Majors.
I still question if Carlos has figured out what he’s going to rely on to create that consistent pressure for his opponent that gives him the highest percentage of locking something down. He might serve, volley he might his first ball drop, he can do all of it. He’s going to find it, he’s only 20. It’s going to be beautiful when he does. I hope it’s soon and oftenAdded the American.
Testing week lies ahead for Carlos Alcaraz
With the action now moving to the 2024 Indian Wells Masters, things will be quite challenging for the youngster. Playing as the defending champion and the second seed, he has a big task ahead of him.
With Djokovic not defending any points and leading with more than 800, Alcaraz needs to make a big run to stay close to the Serb. As all seeds get a bye in the first round of the event, Alcaraz’s title defense will start against the winner of the clash between Matteo Arnaldi and Luca Van Assche.
With the unpredictable Felix Auger-Aliassime, in-form Karen Khachanov in his path before the quarter-finals, the draw has not been easy for him. With World No. 3 Jannik Sinner also chasing him with only 500 points between them, the World No. 2 will need to bring out his A-game in the tennis paradise.
