The reigning world No. 1 and defending US Open winner, Carlos Alcaraz, has delivered a clear warning to his potential opponents. “They’ll have to suffer” if they want to beat him, said the Spaniard. The 20-year-old, who won his first major title last year, is determined to defend it and has been in fantastic form this season.
Alcaraz’s spectacular ascent in tennis continued earlier this year when he won Wimbledon. He defeated Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-set final. Despite his lack of grass expertise, the youthful phenom maintained his cool on the grand stage.
Alcaraz recently had an exclusive interview with Eurosport. He talked about how his recent triumphs have helped him approach key matches with a newfound serenity. “Even though I’m only 20 years old, I feel a little bit experienced in these types of situations,” he explained. “Which means there are many moments that I take with much more calmness than maybe before,” he said.
The world No. 1 stressed his high level of competition, saying, “If people want to beat me, they’re going to have to suffer, run a lot, and play at a very, very high level for a long time.“

Set for showdown with Alexander Zverev
Alcaraz’s self-assurance is boosted by his exceptional physical condition and high-level tennis talents. He was pleased with his performance at Flushing Meadows, where he dropped only one set in the first four rounds. Among his notable victories are wins over Dominik Koepfer, Lloyd Harris, Dan Evans, and Matteo Arnaldi.
Alcaraz reflected on his game approach, saying, “I think I’ve done that incredibly well, playing aggressively, trying to go up to the net a lot of times, keeping the rest of my game tight.”
The formidable Alexander Zverev will face Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, setting the stage for an exciting match. Zverev, who advanced to the quarterfinals after a five-set fight with Jannik Sinner, is a difficult opponent for the world No. 1.
The winner of the Alcaraz-Zverev match will move on to the semi-finals, where they might face third seed Daniil Medvedev or Andrey Rublev. Tennis fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the conclusion of these high-stakes matches as Alcaraz continues his quest to retain his US Open championship.
