World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz‘s outing at the 2022 Paris Masters came to an abrupt end when he retired midway from the match against Holger Rune. He withdrew from the match citing an abdominal injury despite receiving medical assistance during the match. He then went on to reveal that it was a precautionary decision and was necessary since he did not wish to aggravate his injury further.

Alcaraz elaborated on the reasons for his mid-match withdrawal, which was the first time for him throughout the year. He revealed that he did not feel right during the match, especially during the service games, and even struggled with his forehand. As per the Spanish tennis player himself, it was the first time he experienced such problems but hopes to recover in time after further examination, keeping in mind the upcoming Year-end championship.

With Alcaraz’s confession, it drew to the fact that the 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal faced a similar injury during his outing at Wimbledon. His injury in the quarter-finals led to his withdrawal prior to his semi-finals against Nick Kyrgios, giving him the experience of playing in a final of the Grand Slam final for the first time.

During the post-match interview, Carlos Alcaraz went on to say that “It’s something wrong with the abdomen. Yeah, at the end of the set, it was wrong. It was getting wrong, and yeah, I preferred to retire and see it and take care of it. I cannot stretch. I mean, I couldn’t serve well. I couldn’t hit the forehand well. When I turn the body, I feel it. So I feel the abdomen in so many movements. Yeah, I was thinking about it. And, yeah, playing like that with some problems and some things in my mind, it’s better to retire.

While the young Spaniard is the World No 1, Rafael Nadal is just behind him in the overall ATP rankings. It is quite a contrasting fact that the 2022 US Open champion is a one-time major champion while the other one holds the record of the most singles major title in the Open Era with his tally of 22. He was in praise of his compatriot and admitted that like all other players on the tour, Nadal is not an enemy but rather just a colleague for him.

It was quite a shocking decision to know about another injury scare on his radar, since Carlos Alcaraz had brushed off any injury concerns prior to entering the 2022 Paris Masters. He was seen limping during his quarter-finals in Basel, but later stated nothing too serious and would be able to play. It has been a breakthrough year for the onetime Grand Slam champion claiming four ATP titles and his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open.
