Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal

Former American legend Serena Williams has been one of the most influential players of the sport and has been the flagbearer in popularizing women’s tennis. However, the year 2022 has been a landmark season for the tennis legend as she has been nominated for the “Game-Changer of 2022” award. Her contribution to the sport needs no introduction as she holds the record for most singles major titles by a player in the Open Era with her tally of 23 and the second highest in the history of tennis.

It was a remarkable year for the 23-time Grand Slam champion as she made her comeback to the professional sport during the grass season after a hiatus of one year. She looked dominant and was a force to reckon, with despite not winning much on her comeback. The former World No 1 announced her retirement ending her career which lasted more than two decades.

The former World No 1 has been a constant name on the nomination list for the last five years consecutively. Serena Williams had also adjudged the winner of the Game Changer category in the year 2018 for her exemplary contribution to the sport. Apart from the two tennis legends, many other celebrities like NBA legend LeBron James, American snowboarder Chloe Kim, and Stephen Curry are some of the names present in the nomination list. The final results of the 2022 People Choice Awards will be out on the 6th of December.

To no one’s surprise, tennis legend Rafael Nadal is also on the nomination list for the Game-Changer award. He has had a great year winning two Grand Slam titles and was undefeated in the major tournaments until his fourth-round loss at the US Open. He won the French Open for a record 14-time with a match record of 112–3. The Spaniard is the first man to finish as the year-end No. 1 twice after turning 30 years old that came in 2017 and 2019.

The 7-time Australian Open champion is a successful businesswoman and an entrepreneur with her investment in more than 60 startups through her venture firm ‘The Serena Ventures‘. Her love for being involved in sports reached another level when she became a proud owner of a team in the expansion plan in the Pickleball League since the sport has gained popularity in the country with many celebrities investing in the sport.

She further went on with her strategic investments when she became a key investor in the golf startup company founded by Golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy. This was not the first time that Serena Williams has ventured into some other sports since she invested in UFL in 2016. She along with her sister, Venus Williams, acquired a minority stake in the NFL team the Miami Dolphins back in the year 2009.
