Caroline Wozniacki dismisses reports of Serena Williams influencing her decision to make a comeback as the Dane reaches the US Open’s fourth round

Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki has been in scintillating form progressing into the round of 16 stage in the very first Grand Slam tournament after her huge gap from tennis due to pregnancy. She had just beaten Jennifer Brady in their third-round encounter despite going a set down in the very first set forcing a great comeback rolling back the years for the tennis fans all around the world.
At the post-match conference, she was asked about the motivation that led her to come back to the sport and still continue to keep going. Her longtime friend, Serena Williams played her last US Open tournament last year coming back from pregnancy as well, and Wozniacki was asked if it was that moment that influenced her to overturn her decision of temporary retirement and comeback.
Caroline talked about how she came to support Serena in her last-ever tournament saying, “I was just here to support my friend. I really wanted to support her in her last tournament. That was something very special. I wasn’t thinking about my own comeback at that point. I was trying to figure out how I’m going to handle 2 kids. But you know it’s been cool that after James was born and I went to court, all of a sudden I go let’s give it a try. And now I am here and that’s pretty special.”
Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams: A tale of two friends
Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams have been one of the best friends in the sport. Starting from their rivalry on the tennis court to spending time with one another outside the pitch, the duo have been quite supportive of one another.
The duo was regarded as the best players in women’s tennis during the year 2012 and after.
They have met a total of 11 times with Caroline winning just once and Serena dominating their head-to-head on ten occasions. They also faced off against one another at the US Open final way back in 2014 with the American winning it comfortably on straight sets. Both of them even partnered with each other for the doubles title at the 2020 ASB Classic but eventually lost in the finals.
