After the impressive quarterfinal win, American tennis sensation Coco Gauff has given his citizens something to cherish. The young prodigy became the first American in a long time to reach the semis of the highly coveted US Open. At the post-match conference, she was asked about how it feels to become the first American since the great Serena Williams to reach the stage.
She was completely honored to be assigned the same sentence as Serena Williams, whom she considers her idol. Gauff also talked about how she considers herself a long way off from her idol and by no means on the same line. Gauff also stated that she doesn’t want to invoke extra pressure on her shoulders by thinking about these personal milestones and wants to get the job done by lifting the title at the end.
She said, “It means a lot to me. Being in any sentence with her is great. I mean, she’s the greatest player of all time, I’m nothing close to that yet. I’m just really honored to be in the same sentence as her. I never take it for granted.”
Sharing her train of thought, she further continued, “She’s my idol. I think if you told me when I was younger that I would be in these same stat lines as her, I would freak out. I’m still trying not to think about it a lot because I don’t want to get my head big or add pressure, but it is a cool moment to have that stat alongside her.”
How has Coco Gauff looked so far at the US Open?
Coco Gauff has been on a great run since the Wimbledon Championship with proper guidance from her new coach, Pere Riba. She was in great spirits leading up to the US Open, with the Citi Open and the Cincinnati Masters also in her bag.
She started the US Open with a breakthrough performance against Laura Siegemund, beating her from a set down 6-3, 2-6, 4-6. Then she beat the rising teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-2, followed by yet another convincing win against Elise Mertens.
She yet again lost the first set against the Belgian and then pulled a scintillating comeback to clinch the match, ultimately with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Then she faced former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, who was on a breathtaking run, and Gauff put an end to her fairytale run by beating her 3-6, 6-3, 1-6. In the quarterfinals, Gauff knocked out Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, giving the Latvian absolutely no chance whatsoever to come back into the game.
