On Friday (June 30), Wimbledon finally announced the draws for the 2023 season. World No.7 Coco Gauff found rather a tough draw and is projected to face World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals.
Gauff had a dream run at her maiden Wimbledon appearance in 2019 where she reached the fourth round at the age of just 15. But Simona Halep restricted her advancement further by defeating her in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. In 2021 also, the American teen sensation could reach the third round but lost to Kaja Juvan in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Last year as well, Gauff could only make it to the third round where Amanda Anisimova upset her in three sets 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Talking about Gauff’s performance this season, though she fared well in doubles, in singles the American won just one title, which she grabbed in January at the ASB Classic by beating Rebeka Masorva 6-1, 6-1. Unfortunately, things haven’t worked that smoothly for the teenager, in spite of that, she did manage to win 24 matches, losing 10 this year so far. She recently lost the semi-final match against Madison Keys at the Eastbourne International.
Coco Gauff is projected to face Iga Swiatek
The 7th seed Coco Gauff will face fellow American Sofia Kenin in the first round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships on Monday (July 3). In the second round, she could face Chinese player Wang Xinyu if she beats Storm Sanders.
There are chances she could either face Elise Mertens or Victoria Kuzmova in the third round, before a possible match against Daria Kasatkina in the Round of 16. If Gauff advances to the quarterfinals, she can be up against top seed Iga Swiatek and it is also one of the most-awaited Wimbledon matches this season.
If Gauff makes the huge upset by beating the Pole, she may face Jessica Pegula in the semifinals and a win over her fellow American will take her to the summit clash where Aryna Sabalenka could be her possible opponent. It will be interesting to see how the American will perform in the season’s third Grand Slam.
At the Australian Open, she exited the tournament following a straight-set defeat against Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round. And at the French Open, Swiatek ended Gauff’s run in the quarterfinal with the scoreline of 6-4, 6-2.
