While things were not expected to go out of hand in a tournament like the China Open, in the first-round encounter between Jannik Sinner and Dan Evans, things really took a different toll. With Sinner looking to finish off the season with a good result at the Beijing Open, the British star was looking to end the Italian’s stunt in China.
During the third set, the Italian star faced some discomfort after he fell on the ground badly after hitting a smash. He hurt his left thigh in the process, which in turn forced him to take a bit of a break between the matches. Sinner was quick enough to call out for the physios, which, on the other hand, were not taken well off by Evans. It was at this moment that Evans took a dig at Sinner, imitating a limp in his leg.
Evans was captured smiling while he gestured like a stumbling person and then also extended his arm to indicate a fall while heading to the bench. As expected, this did put a lot of heat into the match, and Evans also faced a lot of criticism on social media for his actions.
After all this, it was Sinner who had the last laugh as he progressed to the round of 16 matchup with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3, and he will face the experienced Japanese Kei Nishioka in the next round.
How has Jannik Sinner fared throughout the year?
The Italian youngster has had one of the best years by his standards, literally storming to every single tournament as a favorite. He started his year off with a round-of-16 finish at the Australian Open, followed by a title win at the Montpellier Open, beating Maxime Cressy in the final. Right after that, he again made it to the finals of the Rotterdam Open, but this was lost to Daniil Medvedev, who missed the title.
At the Indian Wells Masters, he lost against Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, with a Miami Open runners-up finish right after that. At the Monte-Carlo Masters, he again failed on a title opportunity, having lost against Holger Rune in the semis. At the Wimbledon Championships, he made it to the semis, losing to Novak Djokovic, and finally broke his title drought at the National Bank Open by beating Alex De Minaur in the final.
