Among the usual cliches of athletes complaining about the match timings or talking about their hard work, the grueling training schedule is a fresh narrative cropping up on the internet. Russian Tennis champion, Daniil Medvedev confesses about utilizing pirated websites to follow other matches. The Russian cruised into the quarterfinals of the US Open after registering a solid win over Alex De Minaur.

As a sports channel, ESPN is not available on many hotel TVs. Medvedev took matters into his own hands as he used the help of the internet and pirated websites to watch other matches. He is not the only player complaining about the lack of ESPN on the hotel TV. During the press conference following his Round of 16 win, Medvedev was asked whether he’ll watch Frances Tiafoe’s all-American clash against Ben Shelton.

Medvedev, hilarious as ever, started talking about how his hotel room doesn’t have ESPN and hence he may have to switch to pirated websites to watch some matches. “Funny, I was waiting for this question because I guess in a lot of hotels they have Spectrum,” he told the reporter.

He also revealed how he navigates between matches according to his sleep schedule. “So I cannot watch it on TV anymore. But I don’t know if it’s legal or illegal but I have to find a way because I cannot watch it on TV. So I go on internet and probably this how you call it, pirate websites or something. So I watch tennis there as I have no other choice,” he added.

But at the same time sometimes I do want to watch some series. So I’m like do I put it on the phone or not? So I watched [Novak] Djokovic with [Laslo] Djere till it was 2-0 and then I had to go to sleep,” he said. “I’m probably going to watch it if they don’t play too late. [I will watch on] my phone if Spectrum and this state don’t find the agreement.”

Daniil Medvedev is fresh off his victory against Australian Alex De Minaur, who was seeded 13th in the tournament. Medvedev had fans’ hearts beating after he lost the first set of the match but the former US Open champion made a great comeback and thrashed his opponent in 4 sets. The final score was 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, and with this Medvedev advanced to yet another quarterfinals of the US Open.

Medvedev has advanced to the next round and will be facing another Russian, Andrey Rublev. This is going to be a close contest as both the players are well in form and have worked just as hard to be in this position. The Russians may have different playing styles but it all comes down to precision and execution of strategies that secure their spot in the next round. Medvedev and Rublev are very good friends and know each other personally. Rublev is also the godfather of Medvedev’s daughter Alisa who was born last year.
